First generation augmented reality (AR) - the Human respiration system.

An AR-app allows students to visualize the workings of a set of lungs situated "inside" a student's body.

As part of a pilot study, VIA University College, Denmark, developed an AR app in 2013 to investigate how and to what extent the application of AR could help students gain a better understanding through an increased focus on contextualized visualization.

The setting was an anatomy course with 30 1st-year undergraduates at one of the schools of nursing in VIA. 

This first generation AR-app allows students to visualize the workings of a set of lungs situated “inside” a student’s body using marker-based AR and handheld display (iPad). A marker placed on a t-shirt launches a 3D-model of a set of lungs expanding and contracting to simulate inhalation and exhalation. By orienting the iPad, the 3D model can be viewed from different angels and allows students to zoom in and out. In groups of 4-5, the students work with the lung model and with questions inspired by an inquiry based science education approach (IBSE).

In contrast to earlier used visualizations, e.g. pictures, videos, and models, the AR-app helps nursing student create a realistic visualization of parts of the body “in situ”. In a pilot study of the pedagogic use of the app, students stated that they gained a deeper understanding of the lung function and a better understanding of its physical dimensions – things that are normally difficult to understand on the basis of text or an immobile plastic model. Students also stressed the importance of the possibility of choosing an individual, explorative approach in order to get a comprehensive understanding.
